The Promise Scotland is delighted to announce the publication of two new family learning resources, created with Education Scotland, Dumfries and Galloway Children’s Services Partners, and Aberdeen City Council Family Learning Team.

Family learning is an approach to engaging families in learning that has an impact on both children and adults.

It aims to support the most disadvantaged communities, break attainment gaps, and enable parents to learn how to support their children’s learning.

Aligning Family Learning and the promise

The first of the two resources is Aligning Family Learning and the promise: A guide for family learning professionals and GIRFEC strategic leads.

This resource – created by Education Scotland, The Promise Scotland and Dumfries and Galloway’s Children’s Services Partners – provides guidance for family learning professionals and GIRFEC strategic leaders on how family learning aligns with the promise, and how it can help to keep it.

Why was this resource created?

The resource was created after The Promise Scotland identified a gap in the reporting of Family Learning programmes, which are important in demonstrating the work being done to keep the promise.

Working together with Education Scotland, they found local authorities who already had strong reporting processes in place.

Dumfries and Galloway were approached to help develop a national guide to support a greater understanding amongst practitioners, and to improve reporting. The group created:

  • A learning guide to support understanding
  • A blank template for local use
  • A completed version of the template from Dumfries and Galloway Council, to act as an example for others in completing their own reporting.

This resource can help people on the front line and strategic leaders to work in a unified way to achieve the promise. It can also help to make those strategic leaders aware of the work happening on the ground.

An accompanying animation has also been created to explain how the resource can help. Watch that here.

Family Learning Keeping the Promise Award Pack

The other resource, the Family Learning Keeping the Promise Award Pack, has been created by Education Scotland, The Promise Scotland and Aberdeen City Council.

This builds on the Keeping the Promise Award for schools, run by Education Scotland. The award is a professional learning programme, which people can take part in to get the Promise Award. The new resources repurpose the award for family learning professionals.

The learning programme helps practitioners in developing their awareness and understanding of the promise and the specific commitments around families.

It highlights professional responsibilities under the promise, and gives formal recognition to individuals and settings who complete the learning.
